What is National Dog Day?

International Dog Day, founded in 2004 by pet & family lifestyle expert, animal rescue advocate, conservationist, dog trainer, and author Colleen Paige, is a celebration honoring the canine's important role in family and pet life. Her mission was to reach out to people and encourage them to rescue dogs and give them a forever home. In 2013, New York State Legislature officially approved National Dog Day. The day is designated to create an awareness of the number of dogs that are in rescue centers and encourage their adoption. It’s also a day to celebrate the unconditional love between humans and their dogs.

How to Celebrate National Dog Day?

1. Adopt

If you're thinking of adopting a new canine, National Dog Day is a perfect day to do that! You can search for a homeless pet on the Shelter Pet Project or visit your local shelter or purebred dog rescue organization’s website to find your lifelong friend. Remember that adopting a new family member is a long-term commitment. You will have to prepare and do your research in advance, including figuring out any monetary obligations. Before they move in, you'll need to make sure you have all of the necessities your new pet will need.

2. Donate to Help Dogs in Need

If you love dogs and are happy to celebrate International Dog Day with a good deed, then why not donate to a dog charity? There are plenty of dog-related charities out there and some even have special events scheduled for International Dog Day. You could donate to your local animal shelter to help them with their work. They often have to deal with animals who have been abandoned or abused and they need all the help they can get. Alternatively, you could donate to a dog-related charity that helps dogs in developing countries. Numerous charities help bring medical attention to sick dogs and provide vaccinations for young puppies too.

3. Host a Dog Party

If you’re the kind of person who likes to go all out for their celebrations, then you’ll love hosting a dog party for National Dog Day. You can make homemade dog treats or cake, prepare some fun games and invite your pup’s best friends. Just make sure you create a safe environment for dogs to run around and play with each other.

4. Outdoor Activities

If you want to celebrate International Dog Day more actively, then why not go for a walk or run with your dog? You can also try flipping the roles and let your dog lead you on a walk. Let him walk as fast or slow as he likes, sniff everything he wants, and take the lead on where he wants to go.

5. Bring Your Dog to Work

If your dog is friendly with people, why not take her to the office with you? If your office is dog-friendly, then it’s a great way to celebrate International Dog Day. Your dog will love being treated like the special star that she is and you can guarantee that there’ll be plenty of attention and pats from co-workers. You might even inspire other dog lovers to bring their pooches to work too, making it a great way to network. And if you work in an office where dogs aren’t allowed, then see if you can get them to change their rules for one special day. You’ll be surprised how many people love dogs and would love to meet yours.

6. Dog Spa Day

There are several advantages to pampering your dog. Giving your dog a spa treatment at home is a great way to bond with him. You can give him a massage, pedicure, warm bath, and a good brush. But, be sure to plan the entire treatment from start to finish so everything is prepared and goes smoothly.

7. Go for a Swim

If your dog loves to splash in pools, the ocean, lakes, or mud puddles, take them to one on National Dog Day. Certain pools hold “dog swim days” at the end of the summer after they’re closed to people but before they’re drained—contact your local recreation center to see if one is near you.

8. Photo-shoot

All of us have camera rolls full of adorable shots of our puppy, selfies in the park, and cuddles on the sofa. However, these memories are not of the quality that is worthy of a frame. There are many gifted pet photographers out there who would love to photograph a special moment with you and your dog. If you are on a budget, you can set up a photo-shoot yourself. Get creative and set up a cute photo-shoot. Try some action shots or head out for some pictures with a breathtaking backdrop. You don’t need to be a pro with a camera, just have some fun with it.

9. Spoil Your Dog

The best way to celebrate International Dog Day is to spoil your dog rotten. You can take her on a special trip to her favorite restaurant or take her shopping for her favorite toys. You can also let her stay in bed for the whole day if she’s been extra good! You could even let her sleep in the bed with you if she’s normally allowed in the bedroom. There are plenty of ways to spoil your dog and make this special day one that she’ll always remember. Your dog will be grateful for the extra love and attention.
